The Orphan Train Movement

The Orphan Train Movement was a historical initiative in the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries, aimed at addressing the plight of orphaned and homeless children in urban areas. Starting around 1854, organizations, notably the Children's Aid Society, placed these children on trains to rural areas, where they were offered for adoption or labor. The goal was to provide them with stable homes and opportunities. While many children found loving families, others faced hardship and exploitation. The movement raised awareness about child welfare and influenced future social services for vulnerable children.
