The "Original Affluent Society"

The "Original Affluent Society" is a concept introduced by anthropologist Marshall Sahlins, suggesting that early hunter-gatherer societies were actually well-off and satisfied because their needs were easily met through their lifestyle. Unlike modern societies that often chase more possessions or material wealth, these communities prioritized sufficient food, tools, and social bonds, leading to happiness and abundance relative to their circumstances. Essentially, their "affluence" came from living in harmony with nature and having enough, not excess. This redefines our understanding of wealth, highlighting that material abundance isn't always necessary for a good life.
