The Okanagan Language

The Okanagan language, also known as nsyilxcən, is a Salishan language spoken by the Okanagan (Syilx) people in parts of British Columbia and Washington State. It is part of the Interior Salish language family. The language features a complex system of consonants, including glottalized sounds, and employs prefixing in its grammar. Efforts are ongoing to revitalize and preserve nsyilxcən through community programs, educational initiatives, and language documentation. As a vital cultural heritage, the language reflects the Okanagan people's history, worldview, and connection to their land.
