The Ocean Acidification Initiative
The Ocean Acidification Initiative is a global effort to study and address the increasing acidity of our oceans caused by the absorption of excess carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from human activities. As CO₂ dissolves into seawater, it forms carbonic acid, which lowers the water’s pH and harms marine life, especially creatures with calcium carbonate shells, like corals and shellfish. The initiative aims to raise awareness, support research to understand impacts, and develop strategies to protect ocean health and ensure the resilience of marine ecosystems facing these changes.
