The New American Movement

The New American Movement (NAM) was a political organization founded in 1971 that aimed to promote socialist ideals and social justice in the United States. It sought to combine progressive politics with socialist principles, advocating for economic equality, workers’ rights, and expanded social programs. NAM attracted activists disillusioned with mainstream liberalism and the Vietnam War-era social issues, emphasizing grassroots organizing and coalition-building. In 1982, it merged with the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee to form the Democratic Socialists of America, continuing its mission of promoting democratic socialism within the broader political landscape.
