The Negro Theatre Project

The Negro Theatre Project was part of the New Deal programs in the 1930s aimed at supporting arts and cultural development for African Americans. It provided funding and resources to produce theatrical works that reflected Black stories, experiences, and talent, which were often underrepresented or misrepresented in mainstream theater. By doing so, it sought to promote racial equality, cultural expression, and economic opportunities for Black artists, while enriching American arts and culture with diverse narratives. The project helped establish a foundation for future African American theater and contributed to the broader fight against racial discrimination through cultural recognition.
