The Nature of Acids and Bases
Acids and bases are two types of chemicals that interact with each other and with other substances. Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water, giving them a sour taste and the ability to react with metals and certain minerals. Bases, on the other hand, release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water, often feeling slippery and tasting bitter. They can neutralize each other when combined, forming water and a salt. Understanding acids and bases helps explain many natural phenomena, from digestion to the properties of cleaning agents.
