The Mirror Test
The Mirror Test is a way scientists assess whether an animal recognizes itself in a mirror, which indicates self-awareness. During the test, a mark or sticker is placed on the animal’s body in a spot they can't see without a mirror. If the animal uses the mirror to investigate or try to remove the mark, it suggests they understand the reflection is themselves, not another creature. This test has been used with animals like primates, dolphins, elephants, and some birds to study their cognitive abilities related to self-recognition.
