The Metropolitan Board of Works
The Metropolitan Board of Works was a public body in London, established in 1855, responsible for overseeing the city's large-scale infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, sewage systems, and street lighting. It was created to improve urban planning and sanitation in response to rapid city growth and public health concerns. The Board coordinated efforts across various local areas, acting as a central authority before the formation of the Greater London Council. It operated until 1889, when its functions were taken over by newer, more specialized government departments.
