The Mekong River Commission
The Mekong River Commission (MRC) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1995 to promote cooperation among Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam in managing the Mekong River’s water resources. It aims to ensure sustainable use for agriculture, fisheries, hydropower, and transportation, while protecting the environment and reducing flood risks. The MRC provides a platform for dialogue, data sharing, and joint planning to balance development needs with ecological health. It does not have legal authority but supports member countries’ efforts to manage the river collaboratively and responsibly for current and future generations.
