The Maori Wars

The Māori Wars, also known as the New Zealand Wars (1845–1872), were conflicts between Māori tribes and British settlers and government forces. They arose from disputes over land rights, sovereignty, and settlement encroaching on Māori territories. Māori sought to defend their lands and way of life, while settlers and authorities aimed to establish control and secure land for development. The wars resulted in significant land loss for Māori, shifts in political power, and impacted the relationship between Māori and Pākehā (European New Zealanders). They are an important part of New Zealand’s history, reflecting struggles over identity, sovereignty, and land rights.
