The Macedonian Phalanx
The Macedonian Phalanx was a military formation used by ancient Macedonian armies, notably under Philip II and Alexander the Great. It consisted of tightly packed soldiers, called phalangites, who wielded long spears (sarissas) that could reach up to 18 feet. This allowed them to strike at enemies from a distance while still being protected by overlapping shields. The phalanx was effective for its time, providing a strong defensive line and overwhelming offensive capability. Its organized structure and discipline enabled Macedonian forces to conquer vast territories and influence military tactics for centuries to come.
