the Lotus Effect
The Lotus Effect refers to the natural ability of lotus leaves to stay clean and dry despite their environment. The surface of the leaves has tiny structures and a waxy coating that create a highly water-repellent (hydrophobic) barrier. When water droplets land on the leaf, they bead up and roll off, picking up dirt, dust, and microbes along the way. This self-cleaning property helps the plant stay healthy and free from contamination. Engineers and designers mimic this effect to develop water-resistant surfaces for fabrics, paints, and other materials, enhancing durability and cleanliness.
