The Lewisian Complex
The Lewisian Complex is a large area of ancient, highly metamorphosed rocks located in northwestern Scotland. These rocks formed over two billion years ago through processes like intense heat and pressure, which transformed original volcanic and sedimentary materials into durable, crystalline formations. The complex is known for its distinctive gneisses and migmatites, representing some of the oldest crustal rocks on Earth. It provides valuable insights into early Earth's geological history and tectonic activity. Today, the Lewisian Complex is studied for its geological significance and is also a notable feature of Scotland’s rugged landscape.
