The Lazarus and Folkman model

The Lazarus and Folkman model explains how we handle stress by focusing on our thoughts and perceptions. When faced with a challenging situation, we evaluate its significance and whether we believe we can cope with it—this is called appraisal. If we see it as manageable, we experience less stress; if not, stress increases. We then choose coping strategies, such as problem-solving or seeking support, to manage the situation. This process emphasizes that stress is not just about external events but also about how we interpret and respond to them.
