The Know Nothing Party
The Know Nothing Party, officially called the American Party, was a political movement in the 1850s that strongly opposed immigration, especially from Ireland and Germany. They promoted nativist ideas, advocating for policies that favored native-born citizens and limited the influence of immigrants. The party was secretive, with members often responding "I know nothing" when asked about their activities. Their rise reflected fears about cultural change and economic competition. Although short-lived, the Know Nothing Party influenced debates on immigration and nationalism, highlighting a period of social tension in pre-Civil War America.
