The Khoja

The Khoja are a group of Muslim communities originally from Gujarat, India, who migrated to East Africa and other regions. They traditionally follow Shia Islam, particularly the Twelver branch and Ismaili sects. Historically, Khojas have maintained a rich cultural heritage, blending Islamic practices with local customs. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many became prominent in trade, commerce, and community leadership within their diaspora. Today, Khojas continue to preserve their religious faith and cultural traditions while integrating into diverse societies worldwide.
