The Kerner Report

The Kerner Report, released in 1968, was a detailed study commissioned by President Lyndon B. Johnson to understand the causes of the 1960s urban riots, particularly in Detroit and Newark. It identified racial inequality, segregation, poverty, and discrimination as central issues fueling frustration among Black Americans. The report emphasized that systemic racism and unequal access to opportunities created deep mistrust and anger. It called for comprehensive policies to improve education, housing, employment, and community policing to promote racial integration and social justice. The Kerner Report remains a significant historical document highlighting race relations and inequality in the U.S.
