The Judicature Acts

The Judicature Acts, enacted in the late 19th century in the UK, unified the courts responsible for civil law and criminal law into a single, more efficient legal system. Before, separate courts handled different types of cases, which could cause delays and inconsistencies. These Acts merged the Court of Common Pleas, Court of Queen's Bench, and others into a single High Court of Justice, and established the Court of Appeal. This reform streamlined procedures, improved consistency across cases, and made the administration of justice more effective and accessible.
