The Jacobite Movement

The Jacobite Movement was a political effort in Britain and Ireland during the 17th and 18th centuries to restore the Catholic Stuart King James II and his descendants to the throne, following his ousting in 1688. Supporters, called Jacobites, believed in preserving royal independence and Catholic succession, opposing the Protestant Glorious Revolution's outcome. They led multiple uprisings, notably in 1715 and 1745, but ultimately failed to bring back the Stuarts. The movement had significant cultural and political impacts, shaping issues of monarchy, religion, and national identity in Britain.
