The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a militant extremist group that seeks to establish a caliphate governed by their strict interpretation of Islamic law. Originating in the aftermath of the Iraq War and the Syrian civil war, ISIS used violence and terror tactics to control territories in Iraq and Syria from 2014 onward. They attracted fighters worldwide, imposed brutal rule, and committed widespread atrocities. Although their territorial control has significantly diminished, ISIS remains a threat through insurgent activities, inspiring lone-wolf attacks, and efforts to rebuild their network.
