The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was a NATO-led military mission established by the United Nations in 2001 to help maintain security and stability in Afghanistan. Its primary goals were to assist the Afghan government in rebuilding security, train and support Afghan security forces, and reduce insurgent activity. ISAF involved troops from multiple countries working together in a multinational effort to establish peace, support governance, and lay the groundwork for Afghanistan’s long-term stability. The mission officially ended in 2014, transitioning responsibilities to Afghan forces and NATO’s follow-up mission.
