"The History of the First War of Indian Independence"
The First War of Indian Independence, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857 or the Sepoy Mutiny, was a major uprising against British rule. Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company's army revolted due to grievances over unfair treatment, cultural insensitivity, and the use of new rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with cow and pig fat, offending Hindu and Muslim soldiers. The rebellion spread across northern India but was eventually suppressed. Though unsuccessful, it marked a significant turning point, inspiring future movements for independence and ending the Company's rule, leading to direct oversight by the British Crown.
