The Hippodrome of Constantinople

The Hippodrome of Constantinople was an ancient stadium in the Byzantine capital, used mainly for chariot races, gladiatorial games, and public events. Built in the 3rd century CE, it could hold over 100,000 spectators, who cheered teams and athletes in a long, oval-shaped arena surrounded by tiered seating. The structure was a central social and political hub, where emperors showcased their power and entertained citizens. Today, only remnants remain, such as the Obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpent Column, located in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet Square, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of Byzantine entertainment and urban life.
