The Herbig-Haro phenomenon
Herbig-Haro objects are glowing patches of gas and dust that form around young stars. They occur when jets of material ejected by the star travel at high speeds and collide with the surrounding interstellar medium. These collisions heat the gas, causing it to emit light, creating visible, often colorful, knots and structures. Herbig-Haro objects are indicators of star formation, showing us active processes where new stars are shaping their environment through energetic outflows. They typically appear in regions rich in gas and dust where stars are still developing.
