The Hemlock Society
The Hemlock Society was an organization founded in the United States in 1980 that advocated for the right to die with dignity, particularly for individuals facing terminal illnesses. It aimed to promote the acceptance of assisted suicide and euthanasia as ethical choices for those suffering unbearable pain. The society provided information, support, and resources to individuals considering these options and worked to influence legislation around end-of-life choices. After merging with other groups in 2003, it became part of the larger organization known as Compassion & Choices, which continues to advocate for patient autonomy in end-of-life decisions.
