The Great Reconciliation
The Great Reconciliation was a pivotal political event in 19th-century Japan, occurring in 1867-1868, that aimed to restore harmony between the Imperial Court and the powerful Tokugawa shogunate. Faced with political instability and external pressures, leaders worked to resolve conflicts and unify the country. This process involved negotiation, reforms, and a shift of power from the shogunate to the Imperial throne. Ultimately, it paved the way for the Meiji Restoration, ending centuries of feudal rule and beginning Japan’s modernization and centralized government.
