The Great Molasses Flood

The Great Molasses Flood occurred on January 15, 1919, in Boston when a massive tank storing over 2 million gallons of molasses burst unexpectedly. This release caused a wave of sticky, viscous molasses to rush through the streets at estimated speeds of 35 mph, flooding the area and causing extensive destruction. Tragically, the flood resulted in 21 deaths and many injuries. The disaster highlighted issues with industrial storage safety and led to changes in regulations. The event remains a notable example of how industrial accidents can have widespread and unexpected consequences.
