The Great Locomotive Chase

The Great Locomotive Chase, also known as the Andrews Raid, occurred during the American Civil War on April 12, 1862. Union soldiers and civilians, disguised as Confederate soldiers, hijacked a Confederate train called the appropriatly named “The General” in northern Georgia, aiming to sabotage Southern supply lines. The Confederates quickly pursued the stolen train with nearby troops, leading to a dramatic railroad chase through rugged terrain. The Union participants were eventually captured or killed; some were executed as spies. The event became a symbol of ingenuity and determination, inspiring the famous 1956 Disney film “The Great Locomotive Chase.”
