The Government of Ireland Act 1920
The Government of Ireland Act 1920 was a UK law that aimed to establish separate governments for two regions in Ireland: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. It created a parliamentary system for each, intending to address Irish nationalist demands for self-governance. However, it primarily met the expectations of Unionists in the north, who wanted to remain part of the UK, while many Irish nationalists rejected it. Northern Ireland was able to self-govern, but Southern Ireland's government was limited, leading to ongoing conflict and eventually the partition of Ireland. The act marked a significant step in Ireland's complex path toward independence.
