The Gordon Riots

The Gordon Riots were violent protests in London in 1780, triggered by opposition to the Papists Act, which aimed to reduce anti-Catholic laws. Led by Lord George Gordon, thousands of protestors—many angered by restrictions on Catholics—rebelliously attacked politicians, government buildings, and churches, including the historic St. Paul's Cathedral. The riots reflected widespread religious and social tensions and resulted in significant destruction, injuries, and deaths. The government eventually regained control, and the incident highlighted the volatile nature of religious and political conflicts in 18th-century Britain.
