The General Will
The General Will is a concept from political philosophy, chiefly associated with Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It refers to the collective consensus or common interest of all members of a society, aiming to promote the common good rather than individual desires. It represents what is best for the community as a whole, derived through collective decision-making. Importantly, it requires that individuals prioritize the community’s well-being over personal preferences, fostering unity and social harmony. The General Will is not just the sum of individual wishes but an expression of shared values and goals that guide the legitimate authority and laws of a society.
