“The Gastrointestinal System” (textbook)

The gastrointestinal system, also known as the digestive system, is a complex network of organs that processes food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates waste. It begins at the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva, and continues through the esophagus to the stomach, where it is broken down further. Nutrients are absorbed mainly in the small intestine, while the large intestine reabsorbs water and forms stool. Other organs like the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas produce enzymes and bile essential for digestion. This system ensures the body gets the energy and nutrients needed for proper functioning.
