The Galectin Family

The galectin family consists of proteins that bind specifically to sugars called glycans on cell surfaces and inside cells. They play essential roles in various biological processes like cell communication, growth, immune responses, and tissue repair. By recognizing and interacting with these sugars, galectins help regulate how cells stick together, how immune cells respond to threats, and how tissues develop and heal. Because of their versatile roles, galectins are also being studied for their potential in treating diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and infections.
