The French Fourth Republic

The French Fourth Republic (1946–1958) was a period of rebuilding after World War II, characterized by a parliamentary system with a weak executive and strong legislative power. It faced challenges like political instability, frequent government changes, and decolonization issues, especially in Indochina and Algeria. Despite economic growth, the instability hampered effective governance. In 1958, widespread crises led to the establishment of the Fifth Republic under Charles de Gaulle, creating a stronger presidency to stabilize government. The Fourth Republic is often viewed as a transitional phase that shaped modern France’s political landscape.
