The Free State (Ireland)
The Free State (Ireland), officially called the Irish Free State, was an independent nation established in 1922 following the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which ended British rule over most of Ireland. It operated as a self-governing dominion within the British Commonwealth, with its own government and constitution. The Free State aimed to balance independence with loyalty to Britain, but tensions led to internal conflicts. In 1937, it adopted a new constitution, becoming Ireland (Éire), fully sovereign and separate from the British Empire. The transition marked Ireland's move towards complete independence and national identity.
