The fossilization process

Fossilization is the process by which organic remains, like plants or animals, turn into fossils over time. When an organism dies, it may be buried quickly by sediment such as mud or sand, protecting it from decay and scavengers. Over long periods, minerals from surrounding water seep into the remains, replacing organic materials or filling cavities. This gradual mineralization preserves the shape and some details of the organism. Eventually, the original tissue is replaced or encased in stone, creating a fossil that can provide valuable clues about ancient life and Earth's history.
