The Flying Buttress

A flying buttress is an architectural feature used in Gothic cathedrals to support tall, thin walls and large stained-glass windows. It consists of an arched structure that extends outward from the main building and is anchored to a separate support on the ground. This design redirects the weight and forces from the roof and upper walls away from the building, allowing for higher ceilings and more extensive windows, which let in more light. Flying buttresses are both functional in providing stability and aesthetically distinctive, contributing to the soaring, intricate appearance characteristic of Gothic architecture.
