The Five Giants

The Five Giants refer to major social issues identified by William Beveridge in 1942 that needed addressing to improve society. They include Want (poverty and lack of basic needs), Disease (ill health and healthcare), Ignorance (lack of education), Squalor (poor housing conditions), and Idleness (unemployment). These were seen as barriers preventing people from leading healthy, productive lives. Beveridge proposed public policies and welfare systems to tackle these issues, aiming to create a fairer, more supportive society where everyone has access to essentials like housing, health, education, and employment.
