The fight-or-flight response

The fight-or-flight response is your body's natural reaction to perceived danger or stress. When faced with a threat, your brain signals the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones prepare your body to either confront the danger (fight) or escape from it (flight). Your heart rate increases, muscles tighten, and your senses sharpen to help you respond quickly. This adaptive response enhances survival by rapidly mobilizing energy and focus during emergencies. Once the threat passes, the body gradually returns to a normal state, helping you recover from the intense reaction.
