The Fall Leaves
Fallen leaves are the result of deciduous trees shedding their foliage each autumn. This process helps the tree conserve water and energy during winter when water is less available and growth slows. As days shorten and temperatures drop, trees produce less chlorophyll, the green pigment that helps leaves make food. When chlorophyll breaks down, other pigments become visible, and eventually, the leaves detach from the branches and fall. This cycle enriches the soil with organic matter, supporting new plant growth while preparing the tree for the dormant season ahead.
