The Fagin Effect

The Fagin Effect refers to the phenomenon where individuals, especially children or unskilled workers, become less motivated and perform worse over time when they are kept in low-skill, monotonous tasks with minimal challenges or recognition. Named after psychologist Ruth Fagin, it highlights how a lack of stimulating or meaningful work can diminish effort and engagement, leading to decreased productivity and motivation. Essentially, it illustrates that job design influences people’s willingness to perform well: uninspiring work can erode their initiative and performance.
