The Externalist Challenge
The Externalist Challenge concerns whether our beliefs are solely determined by what's inside our mind or also influenced by external factors. Externalism argues that the environment, context, and things outside our immediate mind or brain can play a crucial role in shaping our knowledge and understanding. For example, knowing how to dial a familiar phone number depends not only on your memory but also on having access to the phone itself. This challenges traditional views that focus only on internal mental states, prompting questions about how much of our knowledge is rooted inside versus outside ourselves.
