The English Republic refers to the period from 1649 to 1660 when England was governed without a monarchy, following the execution of King Charles I. Instead, it was declared a commonwealth, with power held by Parliament and led initially by Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector. This era was marked by significant political upheaval, attempts to establish a republican government, and ongoing conflicts between different factions. The period ended with the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, when Charles II was restored to the throne, ending the republic and restoring royal rule.
