The endocrine system
The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce and release hormones—chemical messengers that regulate various body functions. These hormones control things like growth, energy use, mood, sleep, and reproductive processes. Key glands include the brain's pituitary and hypothalamus, the thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, and gonads (ovaries and testes). By sending hormones through the bloodstream, the endocrine system helps maintain balance and coordinate activities across the body, ensuring organs and systems work together efficiently for overall health.
