The Eisensteinian Montage
Eisensteinian montage is a film editing technique developed by Sergei Eisenstein that uses deliberate, contrasting cuts between shots to evoke emotional responses and ideas. Instead of editing for smooth continuity, Eisenstein arranges images to create intellectual and visceral connections, generating tension, conflict, or meaning. For example, placing a shot of a crowd next to a shot of machinery might suggest societal pressure. This approach encourages viewers to actively interpret the juxtaposition of images, making editing a tool for storytelling that goes beyond simply displaying events—shaping audience perception and engagement through meaningful contrasts.
