The Dirty War in Argentina
The Dirty War (1976-1983) was a period of state terrorism in Argentina, during which the military government targeted anyone perceived as a political opponent. Thousands of people, including activists, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens, were subject to kidnappings, torture, and enforced disappearances. The regime aimed to eradicate leftist movements and maintain control, resulting in widespread fear and human rights abuses. Estimates suggest 10,000 to 30,000 people disappeared. The war deeply impacted Argentine society, leading to lasting trauma and ongoing calls for justice and accountability, particularly from the families of the victims known as the "Madres de Plaza de Mayo."
