the Despenser War

The Despenser War (1321–1322) was a rebellion in medieval England against King Edward II and his favorite, Hugh Despenser the Younger. The conflict arose from widespread discontent over oppressive taxes and Despenser's powerful influence, which many nobles saw as corrupt and harmful. Organized by rebellious barons and allies, the uprising aimed to challenge royal authority and curb Despenser’s privileges. Although initially successful in capturing castles and rallying support, the rebellion was eventually suppressed by royal forces. The conflict highlighted tensions between the monarchy and nobility, reflecting larger struggles over power and governance during that period.
