The Denial of Death (book)
"The Denial of Death," by Ernest Becker, explores how humans are uniquely aware of our mortality, which creates a profound fear. To cope, we develop cultural beliefs, values, and personal achievements that give life meaning and temporarily shield us from the anxiety of death. Becker argues that much of human behavior, including religion, art, and ambition, is motivated by an unconscious effort to deny our mortality. Recognizing this underlying fear can lead to greater self-awareness and a more authentic life. The book combines psychology, philosophy, and anthropology to examine how our mortality influences our actions and society.
