the Détente policy
Détente was a period during the Cold War, mainly in the 1970s, when the United States and the Soviet Union aimed to reduce tensions and improve relations. Instead of full confrontation, both sides sought agreements to limit nuclear weapons, increase diplomacy, and cooperate on some issues. This easing of hostility helped prevent conflicts from escalating and allowed for better communication between the superpowers. Essentially, détente was an effort to find mutual understanding and stability in a tense, dangerous rivalry.
